From Engineer to ADHD Coach: My ADHD Journey and Why I Do What I Do
For over two decades, I worked in the engineering industry - 15 of those years completely unaware that I had ADHD.
I’d always been drawn to solving problems, seeing connections others missed, and approaching systems with a creative, analytical mindset.
I loved the technical complexity and purpose-driven work that engineering offered. But beneath the surface, things weren’t easy.
A turning point in my life…
I was constantly battling overwhelm, procrastination, time sensitivity, and a nagging sense that I was never quite meeting expectations - especially my own. I could work long hours, deliver results, and still feel like I was falling short. I’d beat myself up for being disorganised, for forgetting things, for struggling to prioritise and plan the way my colleagues seemed to do so naturally. On the outside, I looked successful. On the inside, I was exhausted.
It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with ADHD at 39 that things began to make sense. That moment was a turning point in my life - not because it “solved” anything instantly, but because it gave me a new lens. I began to reframe my entire experience: what I thought were character flaws were actually signs of a neurodivergent brain working hard to survive in a system that wasn’t built with people like me in mind.
That realisation changed everything…
I began learning everything I could about ADHD, not just from a clinical or medical point of view, but from a lived experience. I trained with the ADD Coaching Academy (ADDCA), one of the leading ADHD coach training organisations in the world. I became a Certified ADHD Coach (AACC and PAAC-accredited), and combined this with the skills I’d developed over years as an engineer, a teacher, and a leader.
That’s when ADHD Remapped was born - a coaching practice dedicated to helping ADHDers navigate life and work with clarity, compassion, and confidence. I work especially with engineers and technically minded professionals, because I know firsthand how the demands of the industry - rigid processes, tight deadlines, administrative overload - can mask the strengths of a neurodivergent brain.
But I also know that the ADHD brain is built for conceptual thinking, innovation, and problem-solving. We are natural pattern-spotters, lateral thinkers, and creative strategists. What we often need is support in building systems that respect how our brains work - so we can turn our ideas into action without burning out or getting stuck in cycles of self-doubt.
Stop trying to “fix” yourself…
In my coaching, I bring together the structured thinking of an engineer with the empathetic insight of someone who’s lived it. I create a space where clients feel seen, heard, and understood - often for the first time. We work on practical tools, mindset shifts, and habits that build momentum. And we celebrate wins - because for many of us, those don’t get recognised nearly enough.
For me, coaching isn’t just a job. It’s a mission. It’s about helping ADHDers stop fighting themselves and start building lives that fit. Because once you understand your brain, you stop trying to “fix” yourself - and you start unlocking the strengths that have always been there.
I’m Matthew, Certified ADHD coach, chartered engineer, and founder of ADHD Remapped.
